In addition to my regular work and projects, I also do some freelancing work on the side, as long as it does not create any conflicts with the things I do at work. My freelance focus has been mainly around General Programming, Book/Page Layout and French<->English translation. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss some potential work opportunities. One of the main reasons for the freelance work is to generate a little income in order to help me get over the hump in regards to my current debt situation. But to be honest, I generally pick projects for which I know I will derive some fun and will learn something new.
Technical Editing / Page Layout
I am also a published author who has written “Shaders for Game Programmers and Artists” and “The COMPLETE Effect and HLSL Guide” in addition to my contributions to the ShaderX and GPU Pro book series as a section editor. I have also operated a small publishing company on the side for a few years, translating and publishing “Practical .NET and C#2“, exercising my artistic side in the layout and design of the book itself. Some samples of my work can be downloaded HERE.
French/English Translation
Being fluent in both French and English has its advantages and have expended my freelance work into the domain of translation as it pays relatively well since there is less outsourced competition in the field. I have done translation for a few Websites, Software packages and a few other general documents. My software engineering background does give me a slight edge when it comes to translation as I understand not only how to translate but how the translation will be used, allowing me to work more efficiently and often directly within the software/website to be translated.
General Programming
I have also done various projects in general programming as long as these projects do not create a conflict of interest with my regular duties at work. A few examples of projects I worked on:
- Video Recording DVR style application for live playback and instant replay of various source for a small hockey league.
- General Windows GUI components, such as a laptop battery estimation graph.
- Media Center UI integration project allowing the mixing of internet and TV.
- Various image manipulation filters including a neural net based image enhancer and raster->vector conversion algorithm.
Always Looking for a Little Extra Income
If you have any projects that fall within my skill set, I am always looking for a little side work (at least until my debts are paid off). Feel free to contact me at: sebastien.st.laurent(at)gmail.com
